African Indigenous Collection

History

Our “ African Indigenous Collection ” of products bears testimony to the many fascinating years of visits to our game reserves and national parks, of our memories of very special trails and walks within south Africa 's famous Kruger National Park – and most especially the “Lebombo Trail” – a 4 x 4 trail along the Moçambiquan border and the northern parts of the Kruger National Park, when we learned so much about the properties of our national trees and plants, herbs and flowers. A significant memory comes to mind of standing on the banks of the “great grey green greasy Limpopo all amidst the Fever trees” and realizing just how much God has blessed us with by way of indigenous flora – endless untapped resources all there within our national bushveld arena.

The years spent learning to identify the plants, trees & wild herbs and learning which parts of them to use; none of this would have been possible without the willing and generous help from so many wonderful African people – Zulu farm workers, Shangaan game rangers and trackers, and Ndebele housekeepers all generously shared their secrets passed down from generation to generation within their own families – ongoing researching and experimenting, questioning and enquiring and most importantly, listening to our African brothers and sisters who have such a vast well of knowledge of the uses of indigenous plants.

The idea of combining a purely “Victorian England” Collection of products with an “African Indigenous” Collection came upon my return from two years spent living in rural England. Sitting in the middle of my parents' beautiful herb garden in Suffolk, England on a sunny September day, I had been reminiscing on my own early youth spent far away from England on a cotton farm in the Sudan and my subsequent return to the magnificent rambling English country garden of my parents' home in rural Suffolk – a garden which held so many fascinating and rare botanical treasures. In spite of being very much an English woman, I recalled having a strong desire to one day return to Africa – this turned out to be South Africa in 1976. Bred into a family of besotted gardeners and herbalists, and recalling the stories of African herbs and plants used by the Sudanese as medicines and to protect and soften their skins, It seemed to me that it was high time I took a look at using those indigenous plants and combining them into the old Victorian recipes used by my great grandmother Lady Frances Glover-Andersen.

It took some years to achieve our current Collection of products but it has proved to be a wonderful success and has made us appreciate what a great privilege it is to live in Africa and to have the freedom to enjoy the health & medical benefits of our bushveld flora. We hope you will all enjoy partaking of our “ African Indigenous” products and will reap rewards in your skin and body care equally as potent as our traditional “ Victorian Garden Collection and our 16 th century Royal Tudor Collection.
