Protect your Baby – Introduction

At The Victorian Garden we believe that Babies deserve safe, healthy
and gentle skincare products which are free from harsh unnatural ingredients
and are a delight to use. Products which nurture and soothe. Products which
comply with our strict “green” policy on ingredients , packaging and meet
international Health and Safety requirements. We believe that Baby Care
products marketed as “natural and organic” ought to comprise ingredients
which are genuinely natural and organic to as near 100% as possible.
Unusually for the 21st century, our products are handcrafted in our own lab
using the best quality organic and natural ingredients – not mass produced,
bottled and labelled in a factory. We personally source all our own containers,
design and print our own labels and recycle where possible. That way we can
offer you world class products at an affordable price. Great care, love and
attention goes into the making of every batch of our products. We support Fair
Trade suppliers where possible and use 99% Certified Organic, non Certified
Organic and Natural ingredients. For safety reasons, the amount of essential
oils used in our Baby Products equals about one tenth of that used in our adult
formulations. All products are mild and gentle – they are petrochemical,
paraben, SLES and animal ingredient free and are not tested on animals. You
can now include your baby in your choice of “go green / go organic” lifestyle.
Within The Victorian Garden Baby Collection you will find a choice of 18
unique and unusual, safe and non toxic baby products, many of which are
based on traditional Victorian baby care recipes combining different plant
extracts popular with Victorian mothers during the 19th century. The formulas
cater for babies from the moments straight after birth, through infancy and into
the toddler stage and have been formulated by an experienced cosmetic
chemist, aromatherapist and herbalist registered with the Allied Health
Professions Council and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Manufacturers
Association (CTFA).

Teething
By the time your child is 2-3 years old he or she will have developed 20 milk
teeth. Teething usually begins around 6 months although there is wide
variation in this as in all aspects of a child’s development. Some may not have
started to teethe at all by the time they are one, others are born with some
teeth! Teething can cause inflammation of the gums and soreness too and
sometimes, fever. Rashes are often associated with teething but are more
likely to be caused by saliva; if left wet the skin becomes sore. Some babies
suffer more than others and many sleepless nights are caused by teething,
starting a cycle of discomfort and tiredness which makes baby more irritable.
Giving your baby something to chew on is very important. Teeth need to be
used. Apples are great for teeth but even tiny pieces can become stuck in a
baby’s throat so be very careful. Teething can also cause runny stools or
runny nose. Some babies get constipated and the best thing for them is fruit
juice. Teething can get wrongly blamed for just about every symptom a small
baby may present so a greater awareness of your baby’s condition is
important at this stage.

Babies are difficult to care for because they can’t tell us what is making them
cry. It is very important to establish contact between the mother and the baby,
to repair the shock caused to the baby when he or she left the mother’s womb.
The newborn baby responds very well to touch which is an important part of
the bonding system between Mother and child, and massage should begin
straight away. Millions of chemicals used in today’s cosmetics and food
manufacturing industries are polluting our planet, our homes and worse, ours
and our childrens’ bodies. None of these chemical ingredients benefit you or
your family in any way and they can be toxic to little babies. Because our
babies and children are more receptive to these highly toxic chemical
ingredients, we need to be very aware of what they are inhaling and what we
are using to cleanse their skins, rub onto their bodies, spray around the house,
and put into their baths. Exposure to synthetic fragrances for example, can
cause dizziness, nausea, rashes, skin discolouration , coughing and vomiting
and allergic skin problems in babies. They can also affect the central nervous
system and cause depression, hyperactivity, irritability, fretfulness and
negative behaviour patterns. Babies can’t tell us that they are experiencing
pain – a headache or lung tightness due to use of a product containing a
synthetic fruit or floral fragrance. Mothers breast feeding their baby should be
alerted to this, as 60% of whatever Mom is putting on her skin is absorbed into
her bloodstream and hence passed on to Baby via breast milk. If you are a
wise Mom you will discontinue the use of chemically based products and
choose the organic and natural option – by doing so you will protect and
preserve the health of your children and give them a far better and healthier
future.

VB13: Lavender and Chamomile Baby Nappy Rash Formula :
The most common of all baby's problems which Mothers think of as a minor inconvenience but which in fact can be very painful for Baby. This formula provides an easy solution to the problem. When washing Baby's bottom you use cotton wool dipped into a bowl of warm water to which you have added a drop of this formula. Baby's bottom must be dried thoroughly before then using Baby Protective Nappy Cream.

VB15: Geranium and Eucalyptus Cradle Cap Formula :
Cradle cap, an unsightly crusting on Baby's scalp can break off in large lumps which can be scary for the new Mom to see. Olive Oil is usually recommended but we find this formula much more successful. Very gently apply the oil formula to Baby's scalp using your fingertips, avoiding the fontanelle. Use this formula once a day until the problem disappears.

If your baby isn't sleeping, here is a remedy which can be used on alternate nights until baby has adjusted to sleeping through the night. There is no need to use this every night as slowly the baby's sleeping pattern will change – for the better all round. When you put baby to bed, place beneath the cot on the floor, not directly under the baby's head, a bowl of boiled hot water. Add 2 drops of the Sleep Inducer Formula. The vapours form the bowl will waft up and the aromatic molecules in the formula will be released into the atmosphere which Baby will breathe in.
