Lindfield House
“Lindfield” Victorian House Museum
72 Richmond Avenue , Auckland Park 2092
Johannesburg , South Africa
Lindfield is a turn of the century Herbert Baker home in the leafy suburb of Auckland Park , Johannesburg. The true magic of this fascinating lived-in Victorian Museum lies within its walls where for two generations, the women of the Love family have amassed and cared for a vast collection of 19th and early 20th century furniture, art, decorative and utilitarian objects representative of the entire Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau period. At present, 14 of the 22 rooms are open to the public, including not only reception rooms such as the Ladies' Drawing Room, Gentlemen's Library, Music Room and Dining Room but also two bedrooms, bathroom, pantries and the kitchen. A unique feature of Lindfield is the comprehensive nature of its contents: each room on show is fully furnished and equipped, just as it would have been when the house was first lived in. The kitchen is ready for staff to prepare daily meals; the bathroom invites one to step into the boxed-in cast iron bath; in the Library one is tempted to browse away the day among the fascinating books lining the walls. In the Drawing Room a table is laid for an“at home” tea, while the dining room table awaits a party of elegant dinner guests. Caxton Press calls Lindfield House “an epicenter for the historically inquisitive – a time capsule.” The Parktown Heritage Trust says “ A delightful heritage experience – a 5 star outing.

The Victorian Garden comment… “ a fascinating tour by Katherine Love who herself is an educated, articulate and delightful person with an amazing knowledge of the Victorian era and is able to transport her guests back down the years. Lindfield is a beautiful quaint home full of interesting treasures. The tour is highly educational for anyone interested in knowing more about daily life during these times, and in the history of early Johannesburg . Sitting on her tranquil verandah sipping tea out of beautiful bone china cups and enjoying Katherine's delicious cream tea is an absolute delight. We highly recommend a visit to Lindfield House especially to those who have a love of beautiful antiques.
The Victorian Garden thanks Katherine & Pierre for the provision of Katherine's precious & irreplaceable Victorian dresses, hats and parasols dating back to the early 1800's, kindly loaned to us for our web site pictures and for the time spent on correct dressing and hairdressing procedures carried out by Katherine & Pierre personally, without which we would not have been able to obtain such interesting photographs.
