The Victorian Water Tower

The Following is a resumé of a visit to the Tower a few months ago by Jacci Babbich, South African journalist working in the UK . You may find this of interest so I am including it:

Dear Lindsay, Your brother is an incredible person. He devoted a large part of the day to showing me around the tower. I am so impressed at the conversion.

What a labour of love. There is still a huge amount of work to do of course but it is really taking shape as, one by one, he is turning all his incredible ideas into reality.

The lighting he is doing is outstanding. I just loved the tiny 'organic' lights set into the newel post on each floor. And the nifty touch that the bottom globe in each newel post is a different colour. As you climb the circular staircase, it thus shows you just when you have reached the "blue" room or the "amber"  or "green"  levels just by the colour.  And that's just for starters...

My best people of all are those who are enthusiasts. Throw in vision, a bit of eccentricity and a passion for life and you have it all as far as I am concerned. I am awed by David's incredible attention to detail. By his tenacity -keeping going with such determination when many a lesser man would have thrown in the towel when faced by all the red tape and council bureaucracy.

I think his tower will be fantastic. He has very kindly given me exclusive rights to the story and I am hoping to start on it today. I got some good photos and just hope I do justice to his visionary undertaking.

I was also knocked out by his story of how George Cawston Snr, packed up all his son's things in a trunk and had it buried, in a never-to-be-revealed place, somewhere in the wood around the tower. It's all stuff legends are made of.
