A Tussie Mussie

In Tudor times a posy of fresh herbs and flowers was arranged in a special way to convey a message in the language of herbs and flowers. This posy, so arranged, would be sent from one person to another – often from a potential suitor to his love interest – and it was called a “Tussie Mussie, and would comprise a variety of scented herbs, flowers, fruits or leaves. It would be decorated with pretty ribbons often to match the flowers and placed in a beautiful filigree lace holder. The Tussie Mussie always contained an important central flower or herb which conveyed the sender's most ardent sentiment. This practice continued down the centuries through the reign of Elizabeth 1, and was still prevalent during the Victorian era. Here are a few examples of the meanings of the herbs and flowers used:
