The Royal Tudor A Tussie Mussie In Tudor times a posy of fresh herbs and flowers was arranged in a special way to convey a message in the language of herbs and flowers. This posy, so arranged, would be sent from one person to another often from a potential suitor to his love interest and it was called a Tussie Mussie, and would comprise a variety of scented herbs, flowers, fruits or leaves. It would be decorated with pretty ribbons often to match the flowers and placed in a beautiful filigree lace holder. The Tussie Mussie always contained an important central flower or herb which conveyed the sender's most ardent sentiment. This practice continued down the centuries through the reign of Elizabeth 1, and was still prevalent during the Victorian era. Here are a few examples of the meanings of the herbs and flowers used: Borage Have Courage Chamomile Patience and Meekness in adversity Fennel Sympathy Hyssop Cleanliness Lavender Silence and Virtue Lemon- Zest & Joy Mint Wisdom is yours Pansy Love will win Sage Health is wished for you Spearmint Warmth portrayed Thyme Sympathy and Sorrow Violet Devotion and Faithfulness always White Lilies Purity Forget-Me-Nots Abiding love Red Roses I pledge Love everlasting White Roses None other as beautiful Sweet Violets Faithfulness promised Camellias Your loveliness overwhelms me Ivy Fidelity always Honeysuckle Absolute devotion Michaelmas Daisies Farewell Mimosa I am Prepared to wait Hyacinth You are Sweetness and Purity Carnation Exquisite beauty Agrimony Ever grateful Pomegranate Admiration for strong character Angelica Inspirational thoughts Basil Ever growing Love Sweet Basil Best Wishes Borage Take heart Burnett Gallantry and Honor Bay Nobility and Hon our Columbine No chastity Coriander Of great merit Cumin Faithfulness Daisy Innocence Elder Compassion Fennel Flattery Geranium Comfort extended Marjoram Your blushes please me Larkspur Infidelity Lily of the Valley Purity and happiness will be restored Lemon Balm My sympathy is extended Lime Blossom Conjugal Love Marigold Remembrance of happiness Mint Virtue and wisdom Myrtle Love Mint Purity Mugwort Joy and happiness Nasturtium Patriotism Parsley Let us rejoice and celebrate Poppy - Consolation Rosebuds, pink you are pure and lovely Rosebuds, yellow infidelity Rosebuds, white why your silence?
